What is Your happy place?
I have so MANY happy places! That's a tough one.... I love entertaining friends and family, so our country kitchen and extended dining room certainly make me feel happy. But I would have to say that being outside, in Nature, is what really fills my heart and soul. I love working in our gardens, listening to the birdsong and squirrels chattering. Hikes with my husband (locally or abroad) are another opportunity to really connect and commune with our beautiful Mama Earth, and all her inhabitants. I just love being outside, and feeling truly alive. How do you unwind at the end of the week? Unwinding at the end of a work week usually involves some quality time with my husband, Ralph. We enjoy a nice red wine, some tasty munchies and watching movies on Friday nights, in preparation for some adventures on Saturday or Sunday! Meal you could eat everyday? A meal I could eat everyday? Easy! Any kind of cold salad, chock-full of leafy greens, colourful beets and carrots, possibly some legumes and a berry-infused vinaigrette dressing. With grilled chicken or shrimp on top.... mmmm, now I'm hungry! Best gardening tip? Haha, I have so many of those, but I'll give you my top ones 1) Be vigilant with the teeny, tiny weeds and you won't have to wrestle with them when they get out of control. I love using something called a scuffle hoe to run over the ground, and it effortlessly lops off the weeds, without disturbing the soil too much. 2) Always plant according to scale. If you have a large, sweeping entrance, you want waves of plants, and have the luxury of selecting larger, bolder flowers and shrubs. If you have a small simple space, keep the plants appropriately small and not too many varieties, so it doesn't look too busy. 3) Know where your plants will thrive. Some plants love to bake in the heat of the sun, others need shade for most of the day. They will never thrive effortlessly if you have plunked them somewhere they don't want to be. Favorite getaway destination? We have traveled to South America for our winter vacation several times now and just LOVE it! Peru, El Salvador, and Ecuador have been amazing. The hospitality of the people, the incredible (for the most part, organic) food, the opportunity to explore new cultures and landscapes really makes for a fabulous holiday, with lots of fantastic memories.
