This post has possibly been the most challenging to write, not because it was a painful experience - but because it was an amazing experience! So much so that finding the right words to describe the emotions I felt, was just not happening. Who would have thought that getting my picture taken could have had such an impact on me?
A few months back I was introduced to Desiree at a women's networking event. She introduced herself as a photographer specializing in bring out the best in women. I was intrigued because, as a Self Care Advocate I am always looking for unique ways to help inspire women to be their best self, love themselves and live the life they want - and this was certainly unique. After our introduction, Desiree reached out and offered me a complimentary photo shoot, so I could experience first hand what she had described. Hmm... Oh the things I do - to discover new things for you lovelies ..lol. While I approached this as research, and thought it would be a break from the regular editorial stuff, darlings I did not in my wildest imagination expect what this research assignment unearthed.
"Looking in the mirror is not the same as seeing yourself captured through the lens of a professional photographer, whose eye sees you differently from the way you see yourself. They bring out the true essence that is YOU!
The whole process was carried out in the most professional manner, with attention to every detail and lots of encouraging support. From the initial meeting, to discuss the process; wardrobe and beauty guides; to shoot day; the team of gals that held my hand, turned up great music to ease me through the shoot - it was amazing. Oh and there was bubbly, strawberries and chocolate!
While it was a fabulous experience I was not expecting the discovery I made on reveal day. Yes, I had seen behind the scenes photos and if you follow along on HHL Instagram you may recall some of the above photos I shared. As I walked into the studio looking back at me on the wall of images, I came face to face with glimpses of someone whom I had not seen for a very long time - someone who I thought had vanished forever. It's taken me some time to put into words that moment, this is the closest I have come to articulating it - "Looking in the mirror is not the same as seeing yourself captured through the lens of a professional photographer, whose eye sees you differently from the way you see yourself. They bring out the true essence that is YOU"!
What started out as a blog writing project to explore a unique way for women to do something for themselves, to celebrate milestones and victories of over coming life detours, turned out to give me a gift I never imagined. I know now that, despite not being that gal who died when I survived my accident - parts of her remained, patiently waiting to be re-discovered - like that sparkle in my eye. When I look at this photo I am reminded of the adventurous gal I use to be - and while adventure may look different now, it can still be a part of me, I just needed a little reminder.
Have you treated yourself to a professional photo shoot?
I invite you to visit Desiree's website - here- and discover how you can schedule your very own professional photo shoot.
disclaimer: while the photo shoot was complimentary - it was not as an incentive to write about my experience, I chose to do that on my own. As well I purchased photos from the shoot at my own cost. All opinions are my own.
